Race 10 Faugheen’s Grand Final Sponsor: Tara Chandeliers; Michael Phelan Transport Ltd; Kiltorgan Raceway The date of this year’s race is Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th July. Faugheen’s race is a very important event nationally as it is staged in the middle of the All Ireland Championship when the battle for points is well underway and the race to be the All Ireland Champion is very close between the leaders. 2006 saw the introduction of the 1000cc Super Bikes races in Faugheen for the first time, bringing more competitors, more famous names and best of all, more spectacular racing and much bigger crowds of spectators. The Irish Championship leaders in all races will be competing at Faugheen. The very famous Dunlop family will be here in force: Brothers William and Michael will be out in force with sibling rivalry as both compete in the 125cc/250cc/600cc/ Open and Grand Final. Their cousin Sam Dunlop is also here and will be competing against them in the 125cc and 250cc. Ryan Farquhar is no stranger to Faugheen having been man of the meeting and Grand Final Winner on numerous occasions. With Bike problems knocking him out of last years Final we’re sure he’ll be hoping to regain the title. Club member John Walsh was fourth in last years Final, after an accident this year in the North West he’s back on form and hoping to be a strong contender in the Open/600cc and Final. Local club member Alan O’Dwyer and winner of last year’s 401-750cc is competing in the 201cc/600cc/650cc and Final. Other confirmed entries are Rob Alton, John Burrows and Victor Gilmore. In the Support classes all of the top contenders will be in Faugheen including Timmy Turtle who’s leading at the moment. As it is there are very few races left to the end of the season it is expected that tensions will be high and the racing very competitive as some of the last all Ireland Championship points are at stake. Expect to see the lap records being broken in all classes. The Club is delighted to announce that Tipp FM will be joining us this year, they will have their outside broadcasting unit in the Paddock on Sunday; Race Day. The Club wish to continue Motorbike racing in Faugheen and is very well supported by the residents of Faugheen, people of Carrick and surrounding areas many of whom work with us leading up to race weekend on the Circuit and in the Paddock. With this support the Club can continue ‘racing between the hedges of Faugheen’. South Tipperary County Council is also very supportive to the Club maintaining the circuit as much as possible to ensure safe racing for all the racers. Congratulations to Mr. Denis Whelan from Kilmacthomas who has won the spin with Ryan Farquhar around the Faugheen Circuit. Finally, it is amazing to see the transformation of the quite rustic village of Faugheen into an Irish Championship road racing circuit. For 2009, organizing began just after finishing the last race in 2008! During the final week leading up to race weekend, at least 70 people are needed to get the Circuit and Paddock in shape, bearing in mind that for 51 weeks of the year cattle are grazing in the Paddock and tractors are traveling the circuit! This is what makes it all worthwhile, the adrenaline, the smiles, the banter, the fun, the noise and the smell of motor bikes. Yours in Biking, Carol Curran, PRO
